His second enlistment was on March 15, 1876, at Fort Rice, Dakota, by Captain Thomas French. He was discharged on March 14, 1881, at Fort Meade, Dakota, upon expiration of service, as a Farrier of excellent character. He had blue eyes, brown hair, a florid complexion, and stood 5’ 7” in height. He had the nickname of “Cully”. The nickname was given to distinguish him from Trumpeter Henry C. Weaver of the same company. The nickname was confirmed by Private Ferdinand Widmayer in an interview with Walter Camp on October 7, 1910.*
