He enlisted on September 29, 1873 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lt. William Volkmar. He listed his previous occupation as morocco tanner. He was discharged on September 29, 1878, at Fort Lincoln, Dakota, upon expiration of service, as a private of good character. He had grey eyes, brown hair, ruddy complexion, and was 5’ 6 ½” tall.  During the Little Bighorn battle he was involved in both the valley and hilltop fights.  When the troops retreated from the valley to the hilltop, McCormick gave his horse to his captain, Donald McIntosh. McIntosh took the horse and left the timber. He was killed nearby soon after his escape. McCormick remained in the timber and eventually left with scout George Herendeen. They rejoined the troops on the hilltop and McCormick went on to live another 32 years.
