McGee, James

Asst. Wagonmaster

Quartermaster Employee

Born: July 15, 1832

Died: November 12, 1905

Grave location: Bear Butte Cemetery, Sturgis, South Dakota

Grave GPS Coordinates: N44 24.652 W103 29.729

According to information compiled by Edward Luce, from a report by Lt. H.J. Nowlan – McGee was hired on May 20, 1876 as an assistant wagonmaster at the pay rate of $45.00 per month.

Notes – I found a reference to McGee in MEN WITH CUSTER listing him as being an assistant wagonmaster. The above information is from a posting on the Little Big Horn Alliance message board. McGee’s dates of birth and death are from the metal plate that marks his grave. Back in the 1980s and 1990s, Ernie Gottschalk researched graves and cemeteries in South Dakota and made corrections to those he believed were in error or unmarked. He placed metal plates on the markers with his corrected information. Each of these plates was inscribed with his initials, “ECG”, and the year. He placed one of these plates on McGee’s grave. I do not know where or how Mr. Gottschalk obtained his information to issue these corrections.
