Max joined the 7th Cavalry at St. Louis in 1871 and was a member of G Troop. He served with Custer during his Black Hills Expedition of 1874. After his discharge he became a rancher and later drove the ambulance for the post. He was a musician and was in the 7th Cavalry band. He married the widow of trooper David McWilliams, Annie.
From the Sturgis Advertiser (newspaper) of November 22, 1892: Max Goetz has received a patent for an improved "Railway Coach" to prevent accidents in collisions from the US Patent Office.
His obituary appears in the Sturgis Weekly Record of February 27, 1903.
