He enlisted on March 27, 1876, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, by Lt. Thomas Gregg. He listed his previous job as baker. He was not present at the Little Bighorn fight. He was on detached service at the Yellowstone Depot, Montana Territory from June 15, 1876.  He had blue eyes, light brown hair, a fair complexion, and stood 5’ 8 ¼” tall. He died from erysipelas at Fort Meade on January 27, 1880. His name is listed elsewhere as Katzmeir, Katzenmaier and Katzenmis. The 7th Cavalry Returns of June 30, 1876, list his name as Katzenmaeir.*

*The spelling I am using is the way his name appears on his headstone.
